About I AM
I AM was born out of a desire to provide a hand up to families in desperate housing need in rural communities in central Uganda. Founded in 2017, operating under the name of Ewaka (Home, in the Luganda language), founder Christian Denson wanted to put to best use his twelve years of experience working for non-profit organisations and equal amount of years experience working alongside other chairtable organisations in Uganda. Our passion to help families change their lives combined with a solid foundation of practical experience, working in communities to build relationships, has helped us to help others from day one! In 2020 we registered with the UK Charity Commission under the name I AM (registered charity number 1187525) and with a small trusted team we are very excited for what lies ahead and many projects working with families to improve their circumstance for generations to come!
We believe that quality of life begins at home.
I AM Team
What is it exactly that you do?
We work with families in desperate housing need in rural Uganda to help provide safe, secure family homes and opportunities to improve household income. We also prioritise family health through improved sanitation, hygiene and drinking water facilities.
How exactly do you do it?
We work on a very simple model whereby beneficiary families contribute to their home build project, generally through labour or other practical means, while funding is provided by I AM through UK fundraising events, partnerships and collaborations.
How long does it take?
A typical home build project, which not only provides a home but also solar lighting, drinking water, cooking facilities, bathroom facilities, and an agricultural plot, takes around five months from breaking ground to the day the family moving in.
